Images in triplicate

I've been playing with images in triplicate recently.  I kind of like the effect.  I manipulated the colors on my iPad... Something I don't know much about but am enjoying figuring it out.

Bicycle

Last weekend, I was sitting at Barnes & Noble-- one of my favorite places to sit-- and saw this bicycle outside.  I love bicycles. I associate them with wonderful things-- nostalgia, freedom, energy, family, health, travel, etc...  I particularly love the classic cruisers with a big ol' basket on the front and a bell to ring.  I'm sure I'll be drawing one like that at some point soon.

In the meantime, this is EDM #35.  As I expected, I have begun jumping around a bit, focusing on different items on the list in no particular order, either due to interest or opportunity.

I'm also linking up with my talented pals over at Paint Party Friday!  Have a great weekend!

Thank you card

My sweetie wanted something written on a thank you card this week.  I forgot to take a photo of what actually went on the card, but this was the draft of the quote.  I'm sharing this because it has been a fairly unproductive week otherwise.  Hopefully, I'll make up for it this upcoming week!

Whimsical trio

I have been battling a late summer cold all week and have not been very creative.  Whimsical flowers always cheer me up.  Hope they'll bring a happy week end to the folks at Paint Party Friday!

EDM#15: trees

As expected, I've moved away from working through the list chronologically and instead have jumped ahead a bit based on whatever is piquing my interest in the moment.  This delightful weather we've been having and the fact that we're just starting to see the first signs of the trees and landscape changing has had me focused on outdoors and, at the risk of speaking in giant cliches, the beauty of nature.

Liberate Your Art 2012

This summer, I participated in Kat Sloma's Liberate Your Art postcard swap.  What a great project!  Artists from around the world sent postcards of their original art to Kat, who then took on the daunting task of sorting through them all and distributing them so that everyone received six postcards from other artists.

Not only was it an amazing treat to open the mailbox and find these amazing creations-- each one so different from the next-- but a wonderful community grew from it on Facebook. As individuals received postcards, they posted pictures and comments so participants saw not only what they received but photos of much of the work received by others.  Finally, as if that wasn't enough, Kat created a MAGNIFICENT video of each and every postcard sent to her (from 193 artists!).

It was so fascinating to see the diversity of art represented-- from sketches to paintings to zentangles to photography to lettering arts and beyond.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to participate and I thank all those who submitted art and, most especially Kat, who took on the Herculean task of coordinating all of it (and sending her own postcard art out to every participant!).

I can't wait for Liberate Your Art 2013!

This was the piece that I turned into a postcard:

And these are the beautiful postcards I received:

from Michelle Ledesma
from T. Harrington Hazelbaker
from Yui at houndsinheaven.blogspot.com
from Peter Harklau
from Kat at kateyestudio.com

EDM#4: tea cup

This tea cup has a bit of the wonk to it..... Although it is one of my favorites.  I'm kind of partial to tallish tea cups, maybe a little on the narrow side with a lip that turns out ever so slightly.  I like a delicate handle that is easy to pick up and doesn't get too warm.  There is no specific design or design type that I look for in the paint... It just has to strike me..

Of course this is all about tea drinking mugs.  Coffee mugs are different altogether.   And, of course, for those that don't fit either the tea or the coffee drinking criteria, it's very possible they will find a perfectly happy spot on my desk filled the pens and brushes and markers, etc...

EDM#3: My favorite new leather bag

A few weeks ago, I was in New Orleans.  What a fun city!  So much history and character and the food... Wow!  Every night, we ate dinner thinking that it was the best ever... Only to be topped by the next night's meal.

We strolled the art galleries and antique shops of the French Quarter and bought some amazing pieces by local artists.  We toured a beautiful old plantation and even went on a swamp tour-- now that was interesting!  But the best thing about the whole trip was this fantastic leather bag I found.

I'll admit, I am as obsessed with fabulous leather bags as I am with art supplies... And this one is absolutely perfect as it not only looks great (much better than my sketch gives it credit for) but also because it is the perfect size to carry all the art supplies I would ever need to tote along anywhere!  I managed to fit a largish sketchbook (9x12); my iPad; a huge pencil case with at least 2 dozen pitt and micron pens, pencils, brushes, a calligraphy set, a tin of 12 watercolor pencils, a tin of caran d'ache oil pastels; a travel set of 24 koi watercolors, my wallet, my phone, my keys,etc... I'm not sure why I need to carry all that with me... But I will be prepared should I ever decide to actually whip out all those supplies and start creating a masterpiece of urban sketchery!  :-)

Until then, I'm motoring through the EDMs and loving my new bag!

EDM#2- lamp

Chugging along with the EDMs and I'm enjoying being able to concentrate on just sketching without having to figure out what to draw next.

EDM#1: Shoe

For a long time now, Danny Gregory has been one of my greatest inspirations--not just because his art is so wonderfully accessible, but because HE is so wonderfully accessible.  He's amazingly funny and down-to-earth and has created an entire movement of people based on his "Every Day Matters" philosophy.  What's really exciting is that there is an entire Yahoo Group of folks who are doing the same thing!  And even more inspiring... recently, Danny's gone back to his roots and has been working his way through the EDM list of exercises.

One of the things I struggle with most is WHAT to draw-- which is really rather absurd when you think about it.  Really, everything is fair game.  At the same time that I'm whining at myself about not knowing where to start, I've been admiring the way even old shoes can be made interesting when you look at the different ways people approach drawing them.  So, with that, I'm going to stop lurking and admiring what others are doing with the EDMs and try working my way through prompts myself in the hopes that I start to train my brain to see everything as fodder for my sketchbooks.

This old shoe is EDM #1.
