For a long time now, Danny Gregory has been one of my greatest inspirations--not just because his art is so wonderfully accessible, but because HE is so wonderfully accessible. He's amazingly funny and down-to-earth and has created an entire movement of people based on his "Every Day Matters" philosophy. What's really exciting is that there is an entire Yahoo Group of folks who are doing the same thing! And even more inspiring... recently, Danny's gone back to his roots and has been working his way through the EDM list of exercises.
One of the things I struggle with most is WHAT to draw-- which is really rather absurd when you think about it. Really, everything is fair game. At the same time that I'm whining at myself about not knowing where to start, I've been admiring the way even old shoes can be made interesting when you look at the different ways people approach drawing them. So, with that, I'm going to stop lurking and admiring what others are doing with the EDMs and try working my way through prompts myself in the hopes that I start to train my brain to see everything as fodder for my sketchbooks.
This old shoe is EDM #1.

Great drawing and post. I was saying to my kids the other day that the hardest thing about cooking was decided *what* to have for dinner each day. Maybe one of the hardest things about drawing is deciding what to draw!! I agree that the list of EDM prompts is an awesome place to start (having just started myself!) and look forward to seeing more of your drawings.
ReplyDeleteHi Molly - By coincidence, I posted on my blog yesterday that I had been really struggling to know WHAT to draw, and that maybe I should work through the EDM challenges! So I fully understand your problem, and agree with your solution! I will remember the list of challenges whenever I have the desperate urge to draw and fail to fix on anything to satisfy it. Love the shoe drawing you did - and agree that when you look at things differently, they all become interesting, I look forward to seeing your next challenges.
ReplyDeleteOOOO. That shoes looks comfy. Welcome to adventures in the EDM yahoo group.
ReplyDeleteI've just recently started the EDM challenges and love them! I'm a "fledgling" drawer LOL so this project is a good way for me to learn, draw everyday, and not feel overwhelmed...
ReplyDeleteI love your shoe!
Beautiful painting, love the shoe!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you got the contour and highlights on the lovely painting.
ReplyDeleteI too am a big fan of Danny Gregory and have been majorly inspired to do what I do from his works and habits.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you have chosen to look around you and see things as objects to be drawn i.e. ANYTHING goes! It's fun. enjoy. The shoe is great...a nice foot forward, a first step in the righ direction!
HPPF!
Yes, the world around us and everything in it is a wonderful and never ending source of inspiration. Love those shoes, they look soooooooooo comfortable! Valerie
ReplyDeleteDanny Gregory has been a true inspiration. I'm glad you've taken the plunge and joined the EDM challenge. I'm still lurking around as far as that's concerned... Your drawing/painting is excellent. I especially like the way you've captured the highlights of the shoe.
ReplyDeleteDanny would be proud! This is exactly what he's talking about.

Yes, I agree.. what's up with the "i don't know what to paint" thing? I get that too. Not sure why because as you mention - everything is fair game. I love the shoe. Nicely done. Happy PPF
ReplyDeleteAwesome sketch! Love the colors and your inspiring post. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteGreat sketch. I got stalled at drawing my bed, I need to get back on track. :)
ReplyDeleteCool sketch! I have to check out your links, sounds interesting! HPPF!
ReplyDeleteThat seems like a great idea! Love your shoe!
ReplyDeleteLove your shoe drawing. I don't know what I would do without all the challenge prompts I use each week/month from The Daily Paintworks, The Artist Playroom, I am the Diva, (tangle site), Ria Hills monthly challenge at Shoot and Paint, The monthly Virtual Paintout on Google street-view around the globe, and A Day Not Wasted.! I also need to learn that everything has interesting pieces and draw more. Have fun in your class!
