Venice

I recently was going through some old vacation photos and reminiscing about some of my favorite cities.  Venice was definitely high on my list.  In a world where a commonality has been created across cities, both old and  young, with the installation of McDonald's on every street corner, Venice has an ancient feel that is less marred by modern day conveniences.  I hope to get back there soon.

I have been attempting to quickly capture the essence of places/things in 15 minute sketches.  I'm hoping that it will help me to pick up details more quickly, but I'm afraid that right now, they continue to look a bit askew and cartoonish.  Hopefully, they will get better over time.

Don't forget to check out what's happening over at Paint Party Friday!

  2. I love your Venice sketch! I think doing quick sketches is a wonderful idea for practice. It's so easy to get bogged down in detail. I think you got an amazing amount of detail in this sketch while at the same time, keeping good balance with the larger scene. I love Venice, too and hope to go back someday.

  19. Your sketch of Venice is great. I don't think it looks cartoonish! That's what sketching is all about...a quick rendering of something, to keep for later, as a memory or to develop into a painting. Love it. Happy PPF!

  21. Hello, I really like your Venice sketch, I like how it's got this mix of black and white and then some dashes of colour. I fully understand your seeking of an authentic place like Venice. Although I would avoid going there during carneval and Easter breaks when it's too busy. I reckon Autumn would be a perfect time to visit such a place...anyway thanks for visiting over at dreamcolour and have a great week-end! xx

  22. Venice is one of my fave cities, too. You describe it well, the way it remains unmarred.
I actually love this image you've created, and thought it was a bit askew intentionally...I really love that quality about this piece because it brought back memories for me of the layout of the city, the unmarked street names, the way all of the city is constructed around the canal, and the futility of trying to use a map there. :) It brought back memories of giving into the complexity of the city, throwing the map away, and enjoying wandering about.
I love this piece! My favorite by you so far! :)

  32. Venice is so inspiring, how anyone can go there and not feel an overwhelming urge to paint or draw is beyond me. I am trying desperately to get better at rendering scenes and details too.
