portraits

I've always wanted to be able to draw portraits that actually look like people rather than just oddly pulled together sock puppets.  This is my first attempt and I must admit, I find it very challenging but I'm going to keep plugging and see if it's possible to improve at all.

I did this in pen and I think I may try with pencil next time.  Perhaps it will be more forgiving.  :-)

Slide on over to Sophia's Sunday Sketches... You will surely find much inspiration there!

  1. You are so brave trying a portrait in pen... are you mad woman... this is pretty awesome for a first attempt... personally I kind of like the sock puppet approach as it is that much more forgiving... and I must come clean that i am fighting the urge to not add colour to my drawing... it just doesn't look complete at this stage... maybe it is time to walk away and make a cuppa...xx

  5. This is so good, especially as it's your first attempt. You were very brave doing it in pen. I love all the textured lines you have. Keep doing them.

Thanks for dropping by my blog, I have sent you an email answering your questions.

  7. Great start. There is character in this portrait, which is very hard to get. I always tell people that anyone can draw, the problem is that people give up before they put in enough practice to see improvement. People wouldn't expect to sit at a piano and play, but for some reason they think if they can't draw on the first attempt, that they never will be able to. But, you get it.

  13. Molly, you did a wonderful job. I've always attempted my portraits in pencil and end up with smudges. IF I ever try again....lol....I should challange myself to do so with ink. Well done. :) Hugs and happy SS!

  15. Hey that's pretty good for a sketch in pen! I agree that you're brave for attempting it. I always have to do my ink drawings and watercolor illustrations in pencil first, because I make a lot of mistakes.
