Harry Potter

I'm not actually a big fan of Harry Potter (I know, I know, I'm probably the only person on the planet who is not). I was just trying to do a portrait with paint only and wanted to pick someone who had some distinguishing characteristics.  I really struggle with portraits.

I am obsessed... I just can't seem to stop drawing faces.   Oh well, I guess I'll just keep going with it until I burn out or get better. Hopefully, the second will occur before the first!  :-)

I'm going to give the creative every day challenge a try.  The truth is that I am creating every day, but I'm not always doing it in a very organized way. I have sketchbooks in all shapes and sizes with different types of paper all over the house, my car, etc..And, of course, paper is useless without my rapidograph pens or at least a couple of good pencils.  And then, well, maybe just a few different types of watercolors in different places.  And where's my pointed pen?  and on, and on, and on.  As a result of the chaos, much of the sketches, doodles, illustrations-- the compilation of things that will one day serve to highlight my sheer genius (or sheer madness-- i hear there's a fine line) never manage to see the light of day.

Portrait in pencil

This time I attempted a portrait in pencil.  I'm not sure I had any better luck but it definitely felt like a very different process.  For whatever reason, I think I feel freer with a pen than with a pencil... which makes no sense since the pencil obviously allows a lot more room for corrections and working and reworking a sketch.  Despite that, it feels confining to me.  Maybe I just need to get more used to it. 

The good news is that my hubby and daughter both recognized who I was trying to capture right away.  Despite that, it still looks very cock-eyed and amateurish to me. I need to keep reminding myself that all those who make it look so effortlessly brilliant probably spent some time early on learning how to get past the pin it to the refrigerator/kindergarten look.  :-)

portraits

I've always wanted to be able to draw portraits that actually look like people rather than just oddly pulled together sock puppets.  This is my first attempt and I must admit, I find it very challenging but I'm going to keep plugging and see if it's possible to improve at all. 

I did this in pen and I think I may try with pencil next time.  Perhaps it will be more forgiving.  :-)
